BUILDING CARE: MASS DESIGN VISITS MENGO HOSPITAL
This past July, Mengo Hospital welcomed a team from MASS Design Group for a transformative week of collaboration and planning. The visit marked an exciting milestone for the new Mengo Hospital Pediatrics and Outpatient Building as experts in healthcare architecture and design worked hand-in-hand with hospital leaders to envision a future that meets the growing needs of our patients and community.
The MASS team, led by Jean Paul Sebuhayi Uwase, Megan Suau, and Anibal Niyitanga, began their visit with an in-depth hospital tour. Together with Mengo’s team of doctors, nurses and engineers, they explored how the hospital functions today and identified opportunities for improvement—from enhancing patient flow to creating a welcoming and seamless entryway. Central to the discussions was the hospital’s vision for a network of Centers of Excellence, with pediatrics leading the way.
A particular highlight of the visit was the collaborative discussion about materials and sustainability.
MASS connected with local artisans and suppliers to source innovative, sustainable materials that reflect the community’s identity and craftsmanship. Together, they envisioned how locally harvested wood and custom facade designs could bring beauty to the hospital and support local industries. These conversations ensure the building becomes a symbol of ingenuity and care.
Throughout the week, the MASS team worked closely with Mengo’s leadership to address pressing needs, such as plans for additional inpatient beds and creating spaces designed specifically for pediatric care, research, and emergency services. The design also includes solar power and ventilation systems to ensure a sustainable and safe environment for staff and patients. These plans represent more than just improvements—they are a commitment to providing world-class healthcare to every child who walks through our doors.
